How New Jersey sets it For tickets that can be paid without going to court, New Jersey works from ONE statewide schedule: the Judiciary's Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule sets the exact payable amount — fine plus court costs — and it is the same in every municipal court in the state. The underlying statute only sets a $50–$200 band (doubled at 20+ mph over), so when a case is not payable (40+ over, certain zone offenses, or a case heard by the judge), the judge sets the fine inside the band and the uniform number no longer applies.

When a court appearance is required
Exceeding the posted limit by 40 mph or more; exceeding by 20 mph or more in a Safe Corridor or Construction Zone; and, for commercial driver's license holders, any speeding offense of 15 mph or more over — none of these are payable through the Violations Bureau. Local variation — the honest caveat
The Violations Bureau schedule is genuinely statewide — the payable amount for a given tier is identical in every New Jersey municipal court. Variation enters only when a case is NOT payable (40+ over, 20+ over in a Safe Corridor/Construction Zone, CDL holders at 15+ over, or any case heard by the judge): the municipal judge then sets the fine within the statutory $50–$200 band (doubled where a doubling statute applies) plus costs up to $33, and the penalty statute also authorizes imprisonment up to 15 days.
