How much is a speeding ticket in Georgia?

set by the local courtcourt-set

15 mph over the limit, first offense — the full arithmetic is on this page.

Georgia law only CAPS the fine — 5 mph or less over: set by the local court · More than 5, up to 10 mph over: set by the local court · More than 10, up to 14 mph over: set by the local court — and the amount you actually pay is set by the court handling the ticket, with local costs and add-ons attaching on top. This page shows the statutory ceilings, what is uniform statewide, and exactly where the local court takes over. For 15 mph over the limit, the honest answer is set by the local court — the page decomposes what is knowable statewide instead of inventing a total. What raises it: super speeder (absolute speed). Points: Points start at 15 mph over: 2 points (15–18 over), 3 (19–23), 4 (24–33), 6 (34+). Below 15 over, the published DDS schedule assigns no points. Every row on this page carries its citation — 5 primary sources (statute text, court fine schedules, DMV publications), each with a retrieval date, plus the local-variation caveat that applies in Georgia. This is a reference to what the law and the schedules print; it is not legal advice.

How Georgia sets it Georgia's statute sets only CEILINGS on the fine itself, by how far over the limit you were — the actual amount is set by the court that handles the ticket, and local court costs and statutory add-ons attach on top of the fine. Two things ARE fixed statewide: the tier maxima, and the $200 Super Speeder state fee for high absolute speeds.

The fine, tier by tier

Speeding fines in Georgia by speed over the limit. “Base fine” is what the statute or schedule names; “what you actually owe” includes the mandatory add-ons where state law fixes them.
Speed over the limit Base fine What you actually owe Citation
5 mph or less over the limit $0 fine (by statute) state-set set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(1)

The statute caps the fine for this tier at zero dollars ('shall be no dollars'). Court costs are a separate, locally set matter — this row is about the fine only.

More than 5, up to 10 mph over up to $25 cap only set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(2)
More than 10, up to 14 mph over up to $100 cap only set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(3)
More than 14, less than 19 mph over up to $125 cap only set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(4)
19 or more, less than 24 mph over up to $150 cap only set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(5)
24 or more, less than 34 mph over up to $500 cap only set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(6)
34 mph or more over the limit set by the local court court-set set by the local court court-set O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)

The tier list in §40-6-1(b) stops at 'less than 34' — the subsection sets no specific ceiling above that, and Georgia's general traffic-offense penalty provisions take over. This page does not guess a number the statute does not print.

The mandatory add-ons

These attach on top of whatever fine the court sets:

Add-on How it is computed Citation
Super Speeder state fee $200 flat, added by the state on top of whatever the local court imposes — triggered by ABSOLUTE speed: 75+ mph on a two-lane road, or 85+ mph anywhere O.C.G.A. §40-6-189; georgia.gov

Worked example: 15 mph over the limit, first offense

Line Amount Citation
Fine — set by the local court, statutory ceiling $125 O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b)(4)
Where it lands set by the local court court-set

The statute caps the fine at $125 for 15 over ('more than 14 but less than 19'), but the number on your citation is set by the specific municipal, probate, or state court handling it — and local court costs and statutory add-on percentages attach on top of the fine. There is no single statewide total to print, so this page doesn't print one. At 15 over on any road you are also below both Super Speeder triggers unless the limit itself is high (e.g., 15 over a 70 mph limit is 85 mph — that adds the $200 state fee).

What raises it

License points

Points start at 15 mph over: 2 points (15–18 over), 3 (19–23), 4 (24–33), 6 (34+). Below 15 over, the published DDS schedule assigns no points.

Violation Points
15–18 mph over 2
19–23 mph over 3
24–33 mph over 4
34+ mph over 6

15 points in a 24-month period suspends the license. (Ga. DDS, dds.georgia.gov points guidance)

Local variation — the honest caveat

This is a maxima state: every court sets its own fine schedule under the statutory ceilings, and local court costs plus statutory percentage add-ons attach to the fine. Two identical tickets in different Georgia counties routinely cost different amounts. (O.C.G.A. §40-6-1(b) (ceilings only))

This is not legal advice This page republishes what Georgia's statutes, court fine schedules, and driver-licensing publications print, for reference. Amounts change on legislative cycles, and the court named on a citation is the authority on what is owed in that court. Nothing here is advice about any citation or case.
